Alkaline Water pH Levels: A Quick Guide

Remember studying the pH value of various substances back in school? That was – for many of us – the first ‘real science’ experiment that we were let loose with. Using little strips of litmus paper to test for acidic or alkaline reactions was sheer fun, and a ton of valuable learning!

Fancy a speedy science recap?

Alkaline Water pH Levels

pH – Power & Potential

PH is the term we give to the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. As a rule, pH stands for power of hydrogen, potential for hydrogen or sometimes, power potential of hydrogen.

Acidity and alkalinity are measured on a scale of pH values. The scale is between 1 and 14, with a pH value of 7 being neutral. Any substance that measures between 1 and 6.9 is acidic, with number 1 being most acidic. A measurement between 7.1 and 14 will be an alkaline one, with 14 being the most alkaline.

It’s worth noting that at either end of the scale – number 1 or number 14 – any substance is very strong, and you should definitely not drink them!

Balanced Alkalinity for Good Health

Your body – like all other human bodies – prefers a slightly alkaline state. The ideal pH value of the human body is 7.3 – 7.45. The problem is that, unlike our ancestors, our modern diet tends to be very acidic.

Some common foods are particularly acidic. These include:

  • Sugary foods
  • Refined sugar
  • Heavily processed foods
  • Fatty foods
  • Alcohol
  • Meat (especially processed meat)

If your body becomes too acidic, your general state of health will not thrive, and different aspects of your well-being can be negatively affected.

We Are the Water We Drink

Here’s another thing: although age, gender and fitness levels can cause fluctuations, your body is around 45 – 75% water, while your organs, brain and muscles are composed of up to 79% water.

Knowing the balance of water in your body brings the message home, loud and clear. The water we drink needs to be pH balanced, clean and safe because it’s literally what we’re made of!

That means making sure that our water is free from:

  • Pesticides
  • Herbicides
  • Drug residues
  • Chlorine
  • Toxic contaminants
  • Lead
  • Chromium-6

…as well as being pH balanced!
